The Role of Telcos in the 'Internet of Things' Athens - 18/19 October 2012

The M2M (Machine-to-Machine) market, also known as "The Internet of Things", has frequently been touted as a major source of future growth for the industry. In 2016, Forrester forecasts approximately 450 million connected M2M devices globally generating over $17 billion in connectivity revenues in the following end-user markets: healthcare, transportation and logistics, government (smart cities/connected cities), utilities, security and surveillance, construction, education, media, smart homes and cars and more. Telcos face increasing pressure on traditional voice revenues and seek new revenues from services by leveraging existing assets. Lower device costs, IP network deployment, and opportunities to improve business operations in many vertical markets are now driving telecom service provider investment in M2M technologies to capture new revenues. However, connectivity revenues alone will not fill the gap left by declining revenues from legacy telecom services. Long-term success requires Telcos to capture value-added service revenues beyond M2M connectivity in order to profit from the grand vision of an estimated 50 Billion connected devices. While there are lots of possibilities for connecting devices usefully, there are numerous challenges to doing it well and growing the market to its full potential.

Responding to this critical issue the theme of the ETIS Community Gathering 2012 will be: ‘The Role of Telcos in the ‘Internet of Things’. The keynote presentation will be made by Jürgen Hase, VP M2M Competence Center of Deutsche Telekom, and will show how they are bridging ICT and the core Telco business to develop their ‘Internet of Things’ strategy. The morning session will also showcase presentations on our members’ M2M platforms, visions for a networked society and the resulting IT implications. Rounding off the morning will be a panel session composed of some ETIS Working Group Chairmen who will share how M2M is affecting their areas of work from a Security, Billing & Revenue Management and Business Intelligence perspective. The remainder of day 1 and all of day 2 will be dedicated to the following ETIS Working Groups: Information Security, Enterprise Architecture, Procurement & Vendor Management, Business Intelligence & Data Warehouse, Billing, Customer Self Service and the CIO Executive Forum.

If one looks at the ETIS working groups, they will all be facing M2M challenges in almost all areas of treating, handling, analysing, storing, managing and securing new M2M products and services. Both the common session and the parallel working group meetings will provide the opportunity for our members to learn from one another how to take advantage of this unused potential in the Telcos to do better business in the future. 

The gathering is an ideal opportunity for all of the ETIS members, associates and partners to get to network with one another, learn about each other's activities, plans and expectations and above all, share knowledge.
